Year 12 – Ecosystems at Risk

Quick Details

Year 12 “Ecosystems at Risk” Excursions – Fun and Education Rolled Into One!

Looking for an outdoor classroom for your Year 12 Ecosystems at Risk HSC Topics? Sand Dune Safaris’ owners, Ana and Andrew, have a passion for the dunes that extends to their history, formation and management, and love to conduct these excursions! We can cover all areas of the new syllabus, with an emphasis on biodiversity and management of the ecosystem. We can focus on the following topics:

  • Types of Dune landforms and Vegetation;
  • Weathering and Erosion;
  • The nature and rate of change which affects ecosystem functioning;
  • Human Impacts, both positive and negative;
  • Contemporary Management Practices

Stretching for over 32km and located between the city of Newcastle, in the South, and Port Stephens, in the North, the Stockton Bight sand dunes are an excellent example of an ecosystem at risk.The area represents one of the most notable and accessible records of coastal environmental change on the New South Wales coast and is intensively studied. Our guides are open to answering questions and assisting students with their studies, as they relate their knowledge to the experience at Stockton Beach. We can also provide worksheets and other information to assist with studies and fieldwork.

We can run excursions most weekdays during the school term. Departure times and length of excursion are flexible. As a guide, most excursions are usually 3-3.5 hours in length.

A Sample Excursion Program:

  • 10am: Arrive Lower car park
  • Drive down Stockton Beach approximately 5-10km (pending tides)
  • Discuss all topics and walk through the foredunes/swale areas.
  • Drive back down the beach and into the high dunes for some sandboarding and sandsurfing
  • On the way out, stop at highest dune for a great view of the beach and dunes, and some memorable group photos!
  • 1.30pm: arrive back at lower car park
